Education Box #2030

Bildungsmaterial für Schulklassen zu den Themen Meeresschutz, Upcycling und den Nachhaltigkeitszielen der Vereinten Nationen – Ein Partnerschaftsprojekt zwischen Kalpitiya, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Merijaan und Kite Surfing Lanka

Educationbox #2030

Educationbox #2030

Educational material for school classes on the topics of marine conservation, upcycling and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)- A partnership project between Kalpitiya, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Merijaan and Kite Surfing Lanka

SDG 14 Life under Water

SDG 17 Partnerships to achieve the goals

In 2019, the district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf and the municipality of Kalpitiya/Sri Lanka launched their partnership project. The Berlin start-up Merijaan and Kite Surfing Lanka initiated the municipal exchange with the staff unit Education for Sustainable Development (SBNE). The visit of the partners from Sri Lanka to Berlin for World Clean Up Day 2019 and the return visit of the Berliners to Sri Lanka in February 2020 gave rise to the idea of developing a joint educational material: the Education Box #2030 for pupils aged between 12 and 16. The focus is on why marine conservation, plastic waste prevention and the implementation of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the municipal level affects everyone.

The project was conceptually developed and coordinated by the SBNE team. Modules/workshops were developed with various partners such as the Biological Institute Helgoland/Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research, the photojournalist Christiane Flechtner, the start-up Merijaan and the Youth Art School Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. The partners were given pedagogical advice. The aim is to convey content about marine, environmental and species protection, to develop options for action in a global context and to implement them locally. The sustainable packaging design and layout for the Education Box #2030 was developed by students of the University of Applied Sciences (HTW) as part of a practical seminar.

In total, the Education Box #2030 consists of 10 tools, similar to a toolbox. All tools are in English. It is a great tool for students to understand the global problem of plastic waste in the oceans. What makes this box special is that it connects students from different countries. The Education Box #2030 supports teachers in integrating the SDGs into the curriculum, discovering out-of-school learning places and promoting project work.
